Raven Spring Report 2021
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
It's May 12th, 2021, here's a quick report on one of the families at Crystal Cove. I saw a first and that was dad dug for, chased down and killed a small crab but he didn't eat it. First time I've seen a kill and then no interest to eat. Then all of a sudden dad takes off, and runs down a young squirrel. I included the scene where dad has the young squirrel on his entire face, and then later fe...

Help us celebrate National Raven Day 4-27-2. This is a short on how getting out in the wild and spending time with wildlife, birds in general, and then even the ravens in particular can be a positive influence during our continued COVID-19 uncertainties. We encourage you to go out there and get a "Corvid Fix" today, and everyday, and make someone smile by spreading a little CORVID-21 ! You can ...

Birds Before Dinosaurs?

As one who studies and follows the behavior of living birds, I was surprised to be visiting a museum and see footprints, identical to the birds I study, in the sedimentary trackways said to be in the Triassic / Jurassic border. Further study into the known fossils reported and recorded by; Hitchcock (1836), King (1844), Gilmore (1926-27), Sternberg (1933), Ellenberger (1970-72) and others in th...

The West Coast Game Park is one a my favorite places to go to see and learn about animal behavior up close and hands on. Since our first visit in 2011 we've been back a number of times and been able to be with, work with, and learn gobs about baby; tigers, lions, spotted leopards, snow leopards, bobcats (got a love bite from one), lynx, bears and more. The people who care for these animals most...
Science Vs Evolution

I love science! How many people well into their 60's buy microscopes like a kid just to look into all the world around them! How many people are so whacked about raven personalities that they have over a thousand hours (Where's Guinness's Book?) of video tape just on ravens? That doesn't include the many hundreds of hours of a host of many different types of animals! But there are certain scien...

The entire world's population gathers for a party, we need to "social distance", how much land would we need? What country, state, province or county could everyone fit into at 6 feet of distancing? Any guesses? I think the answer will surprise you! Maps by Google and Mac (iMovie Globes). Music, Public Domine.
Baby Ravens Fly V - Talkin n Rockin

This is two very different encounters with the ravens. It's a little long for the general You Tube audience but for those truly interested in the birds it's kind of a fun one. The first encounter is the "air show" I look forward to every year. Dad hangs out with me and the kids are flipping, flying and screaming all up and down the cliffs. I apologize for the wind noise but it is the fact it is...
Baby Ravens Fly IV - Beginning To Talk

Rick talks to the ravens as if they understand him. "Dad" is quite vocal at times and soon the kids start talking back too (no surprise there). Eventually these interactions with one or more of the kids can last an hour or more. Hard to tell who's more curious about who?

Part 2 in our 2020 Baby Ravens Fly series. This is the second day out of the nest and flying and two peregrine falcons attack the entire family over and over again. This is the youngest age I've witnessed falcons attacking the young, and these young ravens get their first lesson in how to avoid certain death! Pictured above, baby ravens hide under brush from attacking falcons.

In my language (Swedish) the names of these birds mimic the way they sound. The Crow (Kråka) sounds like "Kra-kra" and the raven (Korp) sounds something like "Koorr" These words are hundreds, or even thousands of years old and have been distorted, as language does but once you know what to listen for, you can clearly tell that's their origins. Btw the other common corvids: magpie (Skata), rook (Råka) and jackdaws (Kaja) also have names mimicing their sounds.

its amazing how different the "social" behaviors are between the California and west coast ravens are in comparison to a Midwestern, northeast or farther northern raven. The northern raven are far more solitary.

In England there are captive ravens that can speak human words and talk, and they do this with the English accent. Its absolutely insane, its exactly like a parrot. But even a parrot cant mimic the specific accents of humans, it seems only ravens are capable of this. Endlessly fascinating birds. I miss seeing them so much. I live in Florida and they arent found here and I really took for granted where I moved here from and the Ravens that were there. I absolutely adore the smaller fish crow species that we have here and how cheeky and smart they are. But I still really miss seeing Ravens. The fish crows in Florida do the same barrel rolling and dive bombing and surfing the air current just for fun and play the same way ravens do and they do it all of the time its highly amusing. The fish crow is very symbiotic with humans here too and unfortunately very few humans seem to realize just how much so. People always driving around in their vehicles here and are kind of divorced from the life going on around them for the most part. Maybe one day I can get a divebomb barrel roll on video that the crows of Florida do and send it to you. Its a pretty common crow behavior, but I wouldn't doubt it that ravens probably take this kind of play to an entirely different level, as they seem to do with everything else they do. Thanks for the video!

I recently experienced a wild crow eating out of my hand. In my town Čakovec (Croatia), my friends used to throw food to a crow for a few days and it would return every day. When I came to that place for the first time after a few days, a crow appeared, I held out my hand with a piece of bread and it came and took the bread from my hand.

Thanks for confirming, I am making friends with a young large, male raven frequently calling for a woman in the tree outside my balcony. I like to think it’s the same one who showed up days before, all dishelveled, feathers all crazy.. and he just stared into my window at me as i exercised, and was making crazy random calls while staring at me…I asked myself if it was the same raven that I imitated him while walking one day, and he was frantically searching for his new human buddy (in my head, he was pushed from the nest and has mommy issues) and found me after scoping out the place, but…probably not..right? 😅🐦‍⬛❤️

Hello and thank you so much for your faithful light-hearted and reverent observation of this very cool and often misunderstood bird! I live in Anchorage Alaska and have always loved mimicking ravens calls. It's a very common occurrence (especially by native Alaskan children) to see and hear locals immigration the very recognizable Ravens calls, chirps, clicks etc.. often with a great deal of authenticity! I myself have practiced it for most of my life It's fascinating to sit there and "chat" with what essentially is a wild animal, like an old or new fascinating friend! They genuinely seem to be trying to communicate just as much and enthusiastic as the human in the conversation! Here in Anchorage we have a lot of city raven's that I can often see playing most of the day, searching or begging for food, riding the up drafts, often right before dawn, sweeping up off the small buildings we have in our city center. I've recently been forced to use our cities homeless and social services and thusly had much more opportunity to just sit and watch them, (often from Walmarts parking lot where I am not chased away but have nothing better to do and they've free WiFi that is a god send when you don't have any other access to communication and such) and have deepened my interest and curiosity and fascination with this obviously intelligent and funny creature. So much so that I went scouring UA-cam to find any and all videos that detailed there fascinating behavior. Yours is the first video I've found that both shred insight as well as candid and hilarious "observable behavior". Thank you so much for sharing what you've learned! I feel like it has helped cement what will become a lifelong fascination about this special creature and I look forward to checking out more of your videos One thing before I stop gushing, the ravens up here seem to have a different and more pronounced "squawk" that comes from the back of the throat. Rolls a bit. As well as these sort of "chirpy" clicks but very repetitive almost like they are trying to teach us "there" language! It's really cool to try and squawk out "me Tarzan you Raven" and genuinely feels like there is a mutual interest to communicate learn and share. Which sounds crazy when you say it out loud, but I'll say it anyway.. lol Anyhow.. thanks again for sharing. I found EXACTLY what I was looking for in your video. Some answers, but mostly a mutual admiration and childlike sense of humor and wonder and fondness that resonates in my heart and mind. Thank you from Alaska!

Been feeding a pair for nearly five years. They stay through winter. I can't even leave my property because of the snow for near two months. I can get close to the male but his lady won't come for food if I am about. Falcons and hawks aren't allowed in their territory. Wish I knew were they nest. They are not like bee's they go all directions when leaving or coming. They watch me very closely. I can never tell from where. They could make any master spy jealous. Lots of naked apes come around shooting so I believe that is why they are so cautious. I envy there life's so so much. 😊

TY, Do Ravens mimick more sounds than the mocking bird? I see mocking birds as well. I took a video yesterday of a Crow playing with pine straw from claw to beak. Then, it flew with the pine straw in it's beak. In a different area today, I saw Ravens playing in a group near the great tailed grackles, which looks like they have a black coat when flying, but looks like a peacock coat, but shimmery & colorful when seen on the ground or close up & struts like a peacock when they are walking around on the ground, but the young grackles have a brown coat Near my house was Crows their tails, their tails are cut off with the dip in them or flat tails. I see lots of Turkey Vultures daily: they like to fly in groups at times, but they definitely have a small head But there are a lot of variety of ducks & birds in my area to include the hooting owls at night. I thought one owl at dusk was a Hawk, but it was an owl. Letting go is a daily process-Melody Beattie Namaste Peace Shalom

How in the hell you call yourself a scientist yet you're denying process of evolution? And since when doing some things on instinct is an argument against that? Literally you have that life dynamism before you face. I'm glad at least you've developed that kind of reliationship with other animal but why you need to gaslight yourself that you're participating in some grant scheme "ohoho that thing belongs to the nature" (like we doesn't lol) just to justify a love for something?

EASY ! As a "scientist" I tried to figure out how an arm (from what, a dinosaur, reptile?) could become a wing. As an engineer I realize it was, and still is impossible beyond any reasonable doubt. I also looked into scales to feathers. No can do. In fact no one in the entire world has figured it out. And no one has given anything close to any "scientific" explanation that is anything more than we think it might be possible if... Here I made a video with my questions and I clearly demonstrate NO ONE has shown how scales can become feathers. ua-cam.com/video/w8lbEyRHBEM/v-deo.html Tell you what, why don't you make a video showing us how they can.

    • @jacekzytynski9568
      @jacekzytynski9568 7 днів тому

Except they were not scales that "turned into" feathers, first we got protokeratin frill like in protoceratops and then more softy branches seen troughout numerous fossils. Next they developed more like hajrs, working as thermal insulation, and then ironically most raven-like dinosaurs "started" expanding, them helping keep balance, make jumps longer and made possible to attack from heights, and the progression in complexity is clearly visible from epoch to epoch. Honestly i'm kinda suprised you decided to argue on feature that is so well documented instead yapping about something more basic for creationists like eyes, i guess you saw that intelligence developed not only in humans so that's off the table. Again i am amazed that you still think of yourself as a scientist throwing off opportunity to learn something, relying on premade prejudice. What is your research field anyway?
